Local telephone companies can utilize ESBI to provide enhanced services to their customers that are beyond basic phone service, such as directory listings, web hosting and design, Internet access, email service, hospital telephone providers, premium pay-per-call services such as weather, sports, and information services and voicemail. All companies who provide ESBI services to their customers must be authorized by major telecommunications carriers and go through an extensive application and certification process. Consumers can pay for ESBI services at checkout by billing them to their home phone bill at authorized merchant websites. Consumers can only purchase enhanced services and be billed by providing their personal authorization and authentication information at checkout at an approved merchant website. Merchants who wish to provide ESBI services must provide detailed purchase information at checkout, provide an easy way to confirm or cancel the order prior to purchase, disclose complete terms and conditions and send a confirmation email.
